As the capital of the Red Sea Riviera, holidays to Hurghada are a must if you want a combination of beach and culture. Its time as a fishing village has long gone and it's now split into three parts – Ad Dahar, New Hurghada and Sigala. From world-class diving sites and stunning white mosques to the lively nightlife, cuisine, shopping and golden beaches, Hurghada holidays offer amazing entertainment within a pretty Egyptian resort.
Fly from Hurghada to Cairo, located about 400 km or four to five hours by car and two hours by flight, to visit the Great Pyramids in the Giza Plateau, along with the legendary Sphinx. You can also make a day trip to Luxor to visit the Valley of Kings, about three hours’ drive from Hurghada. While here, you can also enjoy a felucca or sailboat ride along the river Nile.
Whether you want to soak up the Riviera sunshine on its luxury 40 km of coastline or dive down to its dazzling underwater coral gardens, Hurghada has plenty to explore.
An hour from Hurghada is the beautiful Mahmya beach famous for its crystal clear waters and white sands. The coral reef is within swimming distance, so don’t forget to pack your snorkel! Off the water, there are activities like Beach Volley, Soccer and SEA-SPI to keep you occupied.
No visit to Hurghada is complete without shopping for exotic wares for your family and friends back home (and something for yourself, of course!). Sigala is full of fantastic souvenir shops and bustling bazaars, selling everything from shisha pipes to spices.
Head to the Senzo Mall in New Hurghada for big brands or explore El Dahar for busy backstreets full of bargains.
Hurghada is perhaps the hottest destination in Egypt for diving into the Red Sea, where you'll encounter stunning coral reefs and colourful fish. The conditions are just perfect for a beginner to learn diving as well as for veterans.
The Abu Nuhas Reef has four shipwrecks to explore for those looking for thrills. You can also try windsurfing and kiteboarding on the waters!
Release your inner party animal by exploring some of the local nightlife, which can be as buzzing or breezy as you want it to be. Kick start your evening at the Caribbean Beach Bar (through the Bella Vista Hotel) or listen to the live music at South Beach before heading to the centre of the strip to blingy Little Buddha and Papas Bar.
Whether you fancy busting a move at the hot nightclubs or trying your hand at local belly dancing, Hurghada has it all.

Taxis are a popular choice here, but agree on a fare before you travel as there are no meters. You'll also find microbuses whizzing from one part of the city to another. Walking is a great way of seeing the area, but take precautions to protect yourself from the strong sun. There is also a water taxi available in Hurghada Marina. Car hire is possible, but driving in Hurghada is not usually recommended.
Hurghada’s network of microbuses offer a cheap and convenient way of getting around the region. Simply point at one and they’ll stop for you, but be warned, they can get very cramped! Buses go further afield too, to Luxor and Cairo.
Hiring a car is possible but it’s not recommended for holidaymakers. Local drivers can be a little erratic and while you may be a confident driver at home, you may have a different experience here. Drive on the right-hand side.
A visa is required to travel to Hurghada, and can be bought at the airport for $25USD (or equivalent). Passports should be valid, with at least 6 months remaining.
