Holidays to Zante (Zakynthos)

On the eastern part of the Ionian Sea is the gorgeous Greek island of Zakynthos or Zante. The Venetians once called it ‘The Flower of the Orient’ for its picture-perfect countryside, spectacular shoreline and towering chalk-coloured cliffs overlooking the vast blue ocean. With something for every taste, holidays in Zante are all about pristine white beaches, idyllic coves and enjoying the Mediterranean sun.

The island is easily accessible from Athens and there are also ferries crossing from neighbouring Killini and Kefalonia. You can expect plenty of sunshine and cool ocean winds throughout the year, with the months from June to August recording some of the highest temperatures. Nature lovers are in for a treat during Zante holidays, as the resort not only boasts lush vegetation but is also home to famous loggerhead turtles. In the western part of the island, you'll find stunning beaches backed by soaring limestone cliffs, with natural caves that have been cut into them due to erosion over thousands of years.

If you're up for a lively nights out, head over to Zakynthos town, which has an impressive selection of cocktail bars. Laganas town in the north has the some of the largest discos and nightclubs too, which serve up cheap drinks and pulsating music from international DJs. A resort of variety, holidays in Zante are also steeped in history and culture, with some of the best museums, including the Byzantine Museum and the Museum of Solomos, worth exploring – it really is a destination that suits all.

A Guide to Zante (Zakynthos) Holidays

Live It Up in Laganas

Live It Up in Laganas

Arguably the most vibrant resort on the island, Laganas is a paradise if you’re into dancing till dawn with other like-minded revellers. If you’re after a secluded and tranquil break, perhaps veer away from this fun-loving resort, otherwise enjoy its bars and clubs including the iconic Rescue club.

Hide Out in Smugglers Cove

If there’s one place in Zante that you should venture to at some point it’s the picture-postcard Smuggler’s Cove. This incredibly photogenic spot boasts beautifully soft sands, azure waters and a fascinating shipwreck. You can only access the cove by boat and the earlier you go the better as it gets very busy!

Go Shopping Zante Town

Zante Town has something for everyone. Its pretty Venetian-style buildings and cobbled streets are perfect for a balmy afternoon stroll. For shoppers there are fashion boutiques, local pottery and jewellery stores and tourist stalls. Artists sell their wares on the harbourfront and there are bustling cafes and restaurants to enjoy.

Delicious Local Dishes

Traditional cooking is a great thing to sample on holiday and Greek food is some of the most delicious in Europe. Spetsofai, a sausage, eggplant and pepper stew, is a Zante favourite and can be found in many of the traditional tavernas across the island. The locals love it, so give it a go!

Wet & Wild Watersports

To the south of the island lies Nicholas Bay, a beautiful sandy beach popular with tourists where you’ll find everything from banana boats and ringo rides to paragliding and canoeing. Want something more immersive? Head to the island’s ‘Lobster Claw’ peninsula located in the eastern coast for scuba diving.

Capture the Perfect Sunset

To the west of the island the picturesque village of Kampi is perfectly positioned for the most glorious sunsets. The cliffs sit 300m above sea level and offer magical panoramic views. At the top, you will also find the Shiva Cross, a memorial to fighters of the Greek civil war.

Go Turtle Spotting

Head to Laganas Bay and explore the islet of Marathonisi, which is uniquely shaped like a turtle. It’s a great place to watch the Greek loggerhead turtles nesting. Please note that entry is regulated by the National Marine Park to aid conservation of the sea turtles.

Explore the Blue Cave

Nature lovers can explore the stunning rock formations in the northern region of Skinari, on a boat tour of the blue caves. Be stunned by vibrant sapphire waters as you sail past the cave’s steep arches and stop for a swim for a truly enchanting experience. If you prefer to stay on board, peer through the glass bottom of the boat for better views.
