Sitting on Turkey's south west coast is the stunning town of Alanya, a bustling holiday resort boasting golden beaches, a quaint old town, waterfront bars, wonderful views and great holiday vibes. Holidays in Alanya will focus on sun, sea and sand. There are numerous scuba and snorkel sites, great day trips to mud pools, pretty villages and cruises along the coast to enjoy, not to mention great bars and traditional restaurants. Beach lovers will be spoilt for choice with the two Blue Flag stretches of Kleopatra, where the ancient Egyptian Queen reportedly swam.
Turkey's beautiful climate makes this spot a great pick for those looking to top up the tan and relax on the beach. Potter around the Alanya Castle, a fort from Seljuk era now converted to an open-air museum, to get a glimpse into Alanya’s rich history. It watches over the beach from a cliff and offers brilliant views of the seaside, red-tiled Ottoman villas and a 12th century Red Tower, too. The nights sizzle here at the Bar District by the harbour where you have everything from terrace bars to four-storey nightclubs all packed with revellers. Robin Hood and Summer Garden are famous party spots to spend a throbbing night on the tiles. If you want to do some shopping at the bazaars, Central Alanya has some great places where you can pick up souvenirs and artefacts or relish the local delicacies. Alanya holidays are ideal whether you're looking for a laid-back break or a lively one - this coastal resort is calling.
The centre of Alanya is easy to get around on foot, and that’s a great way to see the sights - but in the height of summer you may wish to give your feet a rest and enjoy an air-conditioned ride, especially if you’re heading up the hill to the castle. Dolmus minibuses and taxis are readily available and cheap. You can also hire cars, scooters and bikes if you wish.
There is an inexpensive dolmus service that helps you to get around Alanya with ease. There is also an excellent public bus service, with the main bus station found in the centre of Alanya.
Car hire in Alanya is available from the airport or in town. Be careful of other drivers and drive on the right hand side of the road. Roads are generally good in and around the resorts.
Make sure that you buy a tourist visa via the Turkish e-Visa website before you go travel - it costs $20. Passports should be valid for at least 6 months from entry. At the moment, you only need to ensure your routine jabs are up to date, but it’s recommended that you see your GP closer to your holiday to double check the latest medical advice.
Away from the coast, you'll find Sapadere Canyon, a 36m long, 400m high nautral wonder with waterfalls and ice-cold pools. Stroll along the wooden walkways before taking a chilly dip in the beautiful pools.
Take a day trip to Pamukkale, which translates into ‘Cotton Castle’ to see the white terraces of salt deposits and the fabulous hot springs. A bath in its warm waters is said to have curative effects, so plunge in the pools and relax. When you’re done, you could also explore the Greco-Roman ruins near the town of Denzil.
If you’re a lover of the great outdoors, Alanya is a perfect holiday getaway. Why not sign up for a jeep safari and have a rough and tumble day around the mountains, or head out to see on a traditional gulet cruise? Inland there is also rafting, paragliding and cycling tours while on the beach you'll find scuba schools, kitesurfing hire and all the usual watersports.
Set in the heart of Alanya, the historic Red Tower – Kizil Kule – was built in the 13th century and is the town's major landmark. Inside, you'll find the Ethnographic Museum, charting much of Alanya’s heritage, but most come for the jaw-dropping views.
