Did you know that Rhodes is home to one of the seven wonders of the ancient world? The Colossus of Rhodes, a giant statue that once stood guard at the entrance of the harbour, may no longer be standing, but its legacy adds a layer of mystique to the island's rich tapestry of history. Rhodes is not just an island it’s a journey through time, from the medieval streets of its old town to the beauty of its beaches.
Wander through Rhodes's old town, encircled by a formidable medieval wall. Rhodes's old town is like stepping into a living museum, with its maze of cobble streets whispering tales of night, battles and centuries of history. You’ll encounter centuries-old buildings, elegant churches, and quaint squares. Every corner is steeped in history, with remnants of the Knights of St. John and the Ottoman Empire waiting to be uncovered. One of the highlights of Rhodes Old Town is its stunning architecture, which reflects a blend of Byzantine, medieval, and Ottoman influences. Each building tells a story of the city's past, offering a glimpse into its cultural and architectural evolution.
The island of Rhodes has numerous beaches and plenty of great hotels, bars and water sports centres. All of Rhodes's beaches have crystal clear waters and are stunning in their natural beauty. Tsambika, St Pauls Bay, faliraki, Ladiko, Kallithea and other beaches of Rhodes are some of the best beaches on the island.
One of the most visited and popular attractions in Rhodes is The Butterfly Valley. It truly is a wonderful place and is a ‘must-see’ if you are ever on the island. The season to see the butterflies is between June and September, visit during these times and you will see the valley completely swarming with thousands of colourful butterflies. Even if you visit Rhodes outside of these months, the Butterfly Valley is still very much worth seeing. The beautiful rivers, deep forest, wooden pathways and waterfalls offer complete peace. It is truly a stunning place that deserves your attention. The Valley of Butterflies is located just under 17 kilometres away from the city of Rhodes and is on the west coast of the island.
Just a short boat ride from Rhodes, Symi Island emerges from the turquoise Aegean Sea as a picture-perfect postcard comes to life. This island enchants visitors with its colourful neoclassical mansions stacked on the slopes of its harbour. With no airports on this small island, the ferry ride from Rhodes takes about an hour and a half and is approximately 25 kilometres. Though Symi is now primarily a tourist destination, it has a historical significance in sponge diving and is famous for its tiny Symi shrimp. Symi’s main attraction sites are Symi town and the Panormitis Monastery, located on opposite sides of the island. For those not staying in Symi for the night, the best way to visit both is by taking a day trip with an organised tour company. Otherwise, you will need to arrange transportation between the two areas. If you are staying on Symi for one or more nights, renting transportation is recommended for getting around the island.
Rhodes Old Town is also a vibrant hub of culture, creativity and food. Explore its markets, where local artisans sell traditional crafts and souvenirs, or sample authentic Greek cuisine at one of the many restaurants and tavernas scattered throughout the old town. Indulge in the flavours of Greece with freshly baked bread and marmalades to melekouni, a local sweet made of sesame and honey. While exploring the old town don’t forget to browse the stalls for locally made leather goods, handmade gold jewellery, ceramics or glassware perfect to take home with you. For an authentic taste of traditional Greek food, be sure to visit one of the tavernas serving classic dishes like souvlakia and moussakas. If you’re on a budget or just want to have a quick bite, street food vendors offer satisfying, delicious snacks.
From exploring the Valley of the Butterflies to wandering through the streets of Symi Island and Rhodes Old Town, every corner of this island invites you on a journey.
