Corfu, the largest of the Ionian Islands to the west of mainland Greece, is a deep-rooted tourist destination among Greece’s many islands. The late 19th and early 20th century saw many European visitors to the island who were attracted by the island’s rich history, verdant landscapes, beautiful beaches and mild climate. The 60’s and 70’s saw a massive boom in tourism and the island remains as attractive to today’s visitors as it did many years ago.
From, its lush green mountainous interior and endless olive groves, to its beautiful beaches and hidden coves along its rugged coastline, party resorts, vibrant Corfu Town and quiet villages, holidays to corfu have everything you would wish for in a summer holiday, no matter who you are or what your age group you fall into.
For those who like to party hard, the wilder, livelier resorts of Kavos, Ipsos and Gouvia at the place to rock till you drop! You may not necessarily come back with a tan or any the wiser on local sites and culture but you definitely would have had a fantastic party holiday.
No matter where on Corfu you choose to stay, the turquoise blue, crystal clear waters of Corfu offer a wide range of water sports to enjoy, when you finally decide to pick yourself up from the beach, including snorkelling, diving, surfing, water-skiing, and parasailing. If you prefer to go
inland, there is a wide choice of scenic hiking trails that will take you into the cooling shades of olive groves, hidden villages and an array of panoramic views.
A visit to the island’s capital Corfu Town is a must during your Corfu Holiday. The island has been ruled by many. Venetians, Ancient Greeks, and French, to name a few and Corfu Town is where all the traces of Corfu’s historical past blend and can be witnessed in one place. From the ancient fortress in the old harbour, the Liston – a pedestrian street constructed during French rule, imitating the Rue de Rivoli, the narrow streets and multistorey houses constructed during Venetian rule, the cricket pitch (the only one in the whole of Greece) left by the British and the ancient church of St Spiridon, the island’s patron saint, all sit side by side in Corfu town. The Venetian narrow, cobbled streets offer a myriad of shops to browse through for the latest fashions, artefacts, jewellery, and souvenirs and of course, there are plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants where you can enjoy the local fare. Be sure to try out the dishes that are unique to Corfu such as the Pastitsada – a Venetian-influenced beef stew that is served with pasta, is delicious and only the Corfiots can make it this tasty!
