After over two years of travel chaos and postponed holidays, we have finally received the news we have been patiently waiting for!
All remaining travel restrictions scrapped
All remaining Covid travel restrictions will be removed from Friday 18th March 2022 for travellers returning to the UK. This includes the removal of the Passenger Locator Form as well as tests for non-vaccinated arrivals.
In a tweet from the Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, it was announced that: “All remaining Covid travel measures, including the Passenger Locator Form and tests for all arrivals, will be stood down for travel to the UK from 4am on 18 March. These changes are possible due to our vaccine rollout and mean greater freedom in time for Easter.”
The reference to Easter is important as the beleaguered travel industry was counting on an announcement before the key holiday period began, as thousands of families traditionally flock to destinations such as the
Canary Islands,
Spain and
Florida for some rest and recuperation or as a mini break before the big
family summer holiday.
The removal of the long-winded passenger locator forms is a big positive for travellers. The PLFs required travellers to specify their travel details, address and vaccination status which was tiresome and cumbersome for travellers who just wanted to get to some sun pronto! The government were keen to keep it in place for as long as they could to try and keep a lid on any potential new variants, however the travel industry have now got their wish which should see a major bookings boost for
Easter holidays.
The travel industry is united in its approval for these changes. Tim Alderslade, chief executive of airlines UK, said: "With travellers returning to the UK no longer burdened by unnecessary forms and testing requirements, we can now look forward to the return to pre-Covid normality throughout the travel experience.”
It is worth remembering though that most destinations will have their own requirements regarding vaccination status and other measures when entering their country, so make sure you check these requirements before you travel.
Abu Dhabi eases Covid-19 travel restrictions
Abu Dhabi has become the latest destination to remove some COVID restrictions for visitors. Fully vaccinated travellers no longer need to take a PCR test before boarding their flight but they are still required to show an official Covid-19 vaccination certificate once they land in the country. Unvaccinated travellers still need to take a PCR test taken within 48 hours of their arrival or alternatively or a Covid-19 recovery certificate dated within 30 days of departure.
