Tips for Flying with Kids

Flying with kids can feel daunting, but with a bit of preparation and the right approach, it can become an enjoyable experience for the whole family.

Here’s everything you need to know to make your journey as smooth and stress free as possible, no matter which airline you choose.

Selecting your Seats

Firstly, when booking your flight, ensure that you reserve seats together. Most airlines offer the option to select seats during booking or check-in. spending a little extra to choose seats that keep your family together is well worth the peace of mind it provides.

Baggage Allowances

Next, it’s essential to check the baggage allowances for children. These can differ from the standard adult allowances. Infants under two years old can usually sit on an adult’s lap and have a small additional hand luggage allowance. Older children will need their own tickets and can bring their own cabin bag. Planning ahead can help avoid any last-minute surprises at the airport.

Packing wisely is crucial. A well thought out carry-on bag with essentials like nappies, wipes, snacks, a change of clothes, and favourite toys or comfort items can make all the difference. Remember, liquids must be in containers of 100ml or less, but for infants, most airlines allow you to carry baby milk, sterilised water, and baby food in reasonable quantities for the flight.

Family Boarding

Take advantage of any family boarding options that your airline offers, which allow you to board early. This extra time can be invaluable for getting everyone settled without the rush of other passengers boarding at the same time. Once on board, keeping children entertained is key. Bring plenty of activities such as colouring books, puzzles and tablets loaded with movies or games. Remember to pack headphones suitable for kids to keep the noise down for other passengers.

Snacks are your best friend on a flight. Bringing a variety of snacks such as crackers, fruit, and granola bars can keep hunger at bay and provide comfort in an unfamiliar environment. Familiar snacks can also be reassuring for children.

Keep the Kids Engaged

Explaining the journey to your kids can make a big difference. Talk to them about what will happen at the airport, during take-off, and throughout the flight. Preparing them for the experience can reduce anxiety and make them more cooperative.

Bringing a stroller or baby carrier can make navigating the airport much easier. Most airlines allow you to bring a stroller and a car seat for free. A lightweight, collapsible stroller can be handy, and you can check it at the gate before boarding. A baby carrier is also useful, leaving your hands free to manage other tasks.

Stay Calm!

Staying calm and patient is perhaps the most important tip. Travelling can be stressful, but maintaining a positive attitude sets a good example for your kids. If things don’t go as planned, try to stay flexible and go with the flow. Children often mirror your emotions, so a relaxed attitude can help them feel more secure.

Take-off and landing can cause discomfort due to ear pressure changes. For babies, feeding during these times can help. For older kids, encourage swallowing or chewing gum, can help alleviate pressure.

Use the Loo

Make sure to use the toilet just before boarding the plane. Airplane toilets can be cramped and less convenient, especially with small children. A pre-board bathroom visit can reduce the number of times you need to navigate the plane’s aisles.

Keep Documents Safe

Keep all important documents, such as passports, boarding passes, and any required visas or medical information, easily accessible, a travel wallet can help keep everything organised and within reach.

Expect Delays

Delays can happen, so be prepared with extra snacks, activities, and patience. A positive attitude can make a big difference in how your children cope with unexpected changes. Travel insurance can provide peace of mind in case of unexpected events. Check policies to ensure they cover family travel and consider adding coverage for any special needs or circumstances.

By planning ahead and following these tips, you can make flying with kids a more pleasant experience for everyone involved. Happy travels!
